Q.
"Any word on why some drinking water in Lebanon smells like dirt when you first turn on faucet? Mascoma river was cause a few years ago."

A.  It is a little complicated but the short answer is yes, ultimately the taste & odor (T&O) originates from the river. We have doubled the powdered activated carbon (PAC) dosage in response to the T&O concern, also the river flows have been increased in the past two days and it doesn't have the musty smell it had.

The flow of the Mascoma River is regulated by the State Dam Bureau and the Bureau cut the river flow to below their normal minimum to keep the lake level up. I had a call on Sunday from a resident about T&O and there have been approximately 9 calls since related to the T&O. Usually we don’t have the issue until later in the summer when river flows are normally low and the PAC dosage has already been incrementally increased.

Please feel free to contact me if you have further concerns.
