Mechanic Street Improvement Project

General Information

The Mechanic Street Reconstruction Project has been in the que for well over 10 years and is slotted for re-construction to begin in 2016 as per the NHDOT- 10 year plan. The project will be Federally funded with a cost share of 80% Federal and 20% local money. The corridor is currently in the preliminary study stage. 

The Study area encompasses the High street intersection to Exit 19, with all key intersections in between being studied. Right of ways, widths of the roadways, number of travel lanes, potential widening, pedestrian travel, bicycle, transit, traffic patterns will be looked into and improvements to circulation of travel for all modes and access along the corridor and incorporating the Mascoma Greenway into the planning. 

There has been one introduction meeting to the corridor and walkabouts have been scheduled to look at the overall corridor and property owner issues and potential property impacts, ideas for improvements, etc. Three alternatives for the corridor will be generated and presented to the Council and public after traffic studies have been completed and historical information has been gathered. 

The City welcomes your comments, ideas, witnessed issues and concerns with this gateway corridor as we are in the preliminary stages of planning and throughout all stages of the design. There will be many more announced meetings discussing the intersections and design of the Corridor.

How long is this going to take?

In total, we expect that we will be working on your street for 30-36 weeks. Project is expected to begin in the Fall of 2015 or Spring of 2016. 

 

Will my property be affected?

MAYBE. The City’s Mechanic Street reconstruction project includes about 6,800 feet starting from the intersection of Mechanic Street and High Street to intersection 89 Exit 19. It will include the replacement of sewer lines, water lines, and the street’s drainage system. Depending on the character of the area in which you live, combined with input from you and your neighbors, existing sidewalks may be upgraded, or new sidewalks may be added. As we plan for the future of Lebanon, we are working towards unifying Lebanon’s street network. In this effort, we are striving to create livable/walkable neighborhoods. Your input is highly desired! 

Please understand that we will always be mindful and respectful of the historical background of your neighborhood. We know you have concerns about the possible impacts to your land and trees. Please know that we will strive to evaluate all aspects of your property in advance of construction. Any changes or potential impacts will be discussed with you. 

It is also important to note that whenever/wherever possible, we work within the confines of the City’s Right-of-Way. However, there may be times when easements are needed from you to complete the project. Again these will be discussed with you in advance of construction.
 

How will I know what's happening? 

We are developing a communication plan that will incorporate several ways to keep you informed as the project progresses.  Specific Contact Information along with other available means of communication will be provided at the start of the project in 2015.
